Roos Wrap Round 11

Last week the Roos were thankfully back on home soil taking on the developing Swan View side. Only sitting on the top of the ladder, by percentage, it was important that the Roos came away with a win and with some serious points on the scoreboard.

There were a few ins and outs to the side heading into the game, including Kizza coming out due to a rough week of recovery (even after the ice bath) as well as Nick away on lover’s duties! The ins included a recovered Brock and a well-rested Rory as he made his trip back to Perth.

A week of rain didn’t give the boys much hope for a clean game as the ground started to turn into a swimming pool on Thursday night. Fortunately, the sun was out on game day and the ground dry creating perfect conditions ready for a ripper game. Pre-game warm up included a different approach as Nighthawk took the boys on a journey of Jonny the “Ex-Tractor-Fan”. As the siren sounded the Roos allowed Swan View to sneak in the first goal but quickly responded with the help of Luke with a Silky Banana, Tyson a quick three, Oz and Big Boy, the Roos kicking the next six to finish the quarter six goals up.

As the second quarter got underway the midfield struggled to find the hunger for the ball and allowed Swan View to creep back into the game. Back-man Chook was yet again unbeatable sending the ball back to the midfield as quick as it came. Once the ball got into the forward line “Big Boy” Andy helped convert it to the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the goals were not the only thing that was being kicked as the points joined at the same rate. At the end of the first half the scores were Roos 9.9-63 to Swan View 3.1-19.

After the break the Roos still didn’t quite get back to the same effort as they displayed in the first quarter and allowed Swan View to kick three on the Roos two.

After a very tight huddle and some tough love from Adz the boys decided to play footy again and for some get into a bit of a scrap with the biggest bloke on the opposition’s team…Rhino!!! Although the skills were never polished the six-goal quarter helped the Roos build their percentage with a seventy-point win.

Mundaring Celebrations Best On, Dylan “Chook” O’loghlen. The mullet was flowing in yet another great 4 quarter game!!!

Mahogany Inn’s 2nd Best, James “Beavo” Beavington. One of only a few with great skills throughout the game.

Brookwood Realty 3rd Best, Tyson “Hammer” Hamling. Just a cheeky 5 for the day, to go with his six points.

A1Caravan 4th Best, Matthew “Knuckles” O’Keefe. Rucking and running all day.

Mr Magic’s 5th Best, Lyndsey, Lindsay, Lindsey, “Lids” Vitler. Constant attack on the ball and great rebound off half back.

The Peep Show, Dave “One Nut” Ryan. Well done dad!!! I am proud!!!

Roos Wrap Round 10

Another massive week for the Roos, a top of the table clash with the Hawks, slippery conditions on their own dung hill wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Trailing the Hawks by a game and percentage, it was a must win for the Roos if we hoped to remain in the hunt for top spot.

It wasn’t looking to good on Thursday night when we were short a few players, Peps, Jesse and Maitland out, meant we were trying to call in a few ex-players to fill positions to no avail. With some classic “Adz encouragement”, Andy “Tonka” De Abreu, and Kizza put their names on the board, despite carrying injuries. Last but not lease the inclusion of Greggo helped get the numbers up, luckily Greggo and Beavo rocked up and we ran out with a full side!

With the supporters sitting on the hill eating cheese and drinking wine the game got underway. A big start from the Roos set the scene early with captain Jakey copping one high and then kicking the first of the game. The conditions made it hard for clean skills, the ball slipping through hands creating some unwanted turnovers. The backline was winning their one on ones, Austin and Musto capitalised adding goals, the Roos a goal up at the first change.

Knowing the Hawks would come out hard in the second quarter the Roos had to lock down and dig deep. The boys were working hard but the intensity for the ball dropped allowing the Hawks to break away with a three-goal quarter, the Roos on the back foot, the Hawks seven points up at the main change.

After a half time shower the third quarter got underway with both team going hard for the ball and scrapping it out. Chook, Marty and the backline were working their butts off, running straight lines keeping the boys in the game. The Roos only goal for the quarter was brought to you by “Knuckles” O’Keefe and with only a goal each it was a five-point margin at the end of the third.

The nail biting fourth quarter started, and it looked like it was going to be the same as the third. It was tit for tat in the contests for the first 10 minutes which meant it would be anybody’s game but with some explosive power from Nighthawk the tides turned. Aussie after missing one running into an open goal, made amends with two beautiful snaggers, Tyson Jake and Musto adding to the goal scoring a five goal quarter cementing a handy four goal win for the Roos.

Mundaring Celebrations Best On went to Dylan “Chook” O’Loghlen for his four-quarter effort in the backline, the mullet down and dirty in a great game.

Mahogany Inn Second Best was awarded to Marshal “Marty” Hearne for another solid game down back.

Brookwood Realty Third Best went to Tristan “Nighthawk” Vance, the catalyst for our second half revival and fourth quart blitz.

A1 Caravans Fourth Best was Lindsey “Lids” Vitler, for his defensive efforts in the contest.

Mr Magic’s Fifth Best went to Austin “Oz” Thomas for his 4-goal game and classy finishing,

The Peep Show Award went to James “Thanks for showing up” Beavington!

Thanks to the supporters who braved the cold, wet weather for the second week in a row. Don’t forget the QUIZ NIGHT on the 20th of July, Book a table through the Mundaring Football Club Facebook page or see Crystal at the game.

Roos Wrap Round 9

The Roos had a big challenge on the weekend meeting Mount Helena on their mud heap after a night of rain! It was a big game for both teams, with the Roos needing the win to maintain second spot on the ladder, as well as Dev playing his fiftieth game for the club.

With a few out this week including Gaz, Micko and Lachie meant Jakey, Andy and Nick returned to the side. It wasn’t looking to flash at 12pm with an AWOL Beavo, meaning we were short one but with a quick call to the “Firey Ranga”, Maitland, we soon had our 22.

As expected the Lions came out firing, kicking the first three goals within minutes. The Roos answered with one but was replied quickly, the rest of the quarter being one for one.  Unfortunately, Andy (Tonka), was out for the day with an early injury and the Roos had some serious work to do, down by 3 goals at the first change.

In the second quarter the Roos climbed their way back into the contest and put some serious pressure on the Lions.  Back men Nick, Marty and the Ranga started to get on top of their opponents, Musto, Austin and Tyson kicked a few goals and the boys finished the first half with a chance, Lions with a five-point advantage at the break.

As the second half got underway the spark from a few boys with Hamps putting his body on the line and Lindsay’s attack on the ball allowed the Roos to work their way in front. Continued pressure on the Lions throughout the third quarter was not without a price, Tristan and Knuckles joining a bench full of injuries, Nicko into the ruck!

The fourth quarter was the hardest of all, no rotation on the bench meant the boys had to work for the entire quarter.  The Lions started to put the pressure back onto the Roos and managed to get a couple goals bringing the scores within 7 points. More injuries to Mono and DJ meant Knuckles returned to the ground and fought the game out.  The last 5 minutes were extremely tight with plenty of tackles and ball ups allowing the Roos to hold on to run out 7 points winners.

Mundaring Celebrations Best On was awarded to Nick “Studly” Cayley for his work around the ground and in the ruck.

Mahogany Inn Second Best went to Dev “The Feeler” Borstel for his pressure down back, Brookwood Realty Third Best went to Marshal “Marty” Hearne for his composure in the backline.

A1Caravans Fourth Best awarded to Connor ‘Musto’ Musto for his 3-goal effort.

Mr Magic Fifth Best went to Daniel “Smash” Thomas for some incredible marks all over the ground

The Peep Show went to Hamps for a great effort on the wing and really finding his feet, even f they were covered in Mud!

Thank you to all supporters that battled the weather and watched the Roos triumph. We have locked in 20/07/2019 for the Quiz Night and it will be held at the new Mundaring Rec Centre so please save the date and get those teams of 8 together.

Roos Wrap Round 6

This week the boys had yet another tough and physical game playing the Chidlow cougars at our home ground. With a few blokes out with injuries and the man flu scraping 22 together was a challenging task but managed to get to line.

Austin, Beavo, Dylan and Brock out, Tyson, Nick, Andy Freeman in for his first game of the year and Cam back into the side after his first-round injury.

First quarter underway and we started a little slow, Chidlow kicking the first until the boys found their feet, Tyson and Pep kicking the next couple to gain back the ascendency.

Big Keefey decided to take a nap in the middle of the ground but with a quick spell on the side line was back out in the ruck. Chidlow continued to come but with a few goals late to Musto, Tristan and another to Pep on the siren we were up by five goals at the first change.

Throughout the second quarter there were some big hits on both sides and some good hard footy, just before the half time siren big Zac and Dev gave each other a Liverpool kiss ending with a couple split heads. There was claret everywhere on the sidelines and as we cleaned up the mess Musto decided to join them courtesy of a nasty pirouette. As we limped into half time the Roos had a handy six goal lead.

After a well-earned rest and some patch work the boys came back out after half time slotting the first goal with in seconds, then the Peps show started with Rhys kicking goal after goal to help cement the roos lead.

In the back line ‘mono’ (aka rhino) took a big hit but bounced back after a few seconds on the ground, Dev decided to it was time for a spew after a Barbie special and Kizza hobbled off after a nasty knock to the knee, seven goals up at the last change. Fourth quarter and the Roos continued working hard, we had broken the spirit of the Cougars a comfortable ten goal win.

Mundaring Celebrations Best on ground went to Rhys aka Peps with his 7-goal effort. The Inn’s 2nd best was Luke with a great run through the middle, Brookwood Realty 3rd best went to Tyson ‘hammer’ for his classy display.

A1 caravans 4th best was Lindsey ‘lids’, Mr Magic’s 5th best went to big man Keefey for his efforts in the ruck with the peep show given to Michael ‘Micky’ Italiano!

Pep’s seven on the day, Tyson three with Tristan the only other multiple goal scorer with two, singles to Ando, Musto, Hamps, Mick, Kizza, Marty and Chook.

Thank you to all the supporters that came down and especially all the volunteers that helped with the bar, canteen, running water and boundary.

The boys earned a well needed bye to overcome some soreness ready to take on the young Bullsbrook saints

Roos Wrap Round 5

A fantastic opportunity to play under lights away to Gidgegannup last time out and it was time to atone from the previous week’s loss. Tyson, Rory, Ethan, Blake and Nick made way for Zac, Austin and DJ back from a few weeks out.

Oz was keen to make up for lost time and after a quick win in the middle he marked and kicked truly to get us underway. Not happy with one he rattled on the next three to have four at the first change, a goal late to Gidgey had us three goals up. Keefy was linking up well with Dev and Luke in the middle, hitting targets inside our fifty and if not for a dodgy goal call to the second prong Tristan the margin would have been greater.

Jesse stepped up early in the second demonstrating his ability to dance, he was finding Pepp on half forward and that man Oz, another two for the quarter. He was the only one who could find the major opening, bad kicking was keeping Gidgey in the game.

DJ was doing his best impersonation of the energiser bunny, throwing himself at everything and the new crew in the middle, Rhino, Lindsey and Mick began to find some rhythm.

Who knew Chooks could fly, the mullet was free flowing early in the third as he took a cracker and when he kicked truly we finally had a second goal scorer. Tristan joined him soon after to complete the second prong and when Pep kicked his first for the night we were starting to find range and stretch our opponents. The boys relaxed for a few minutes and let Gidge back in the game they had matched our score, still four goals the difference at the last change.

Pep found the goals again early in the last, Andy was spoiling everything down back showing he was more than a cannon ball with a mullet and when Oz kicked his eighth of the game we had run out forty-nine-point winners on a chilly Saturday night.

Oz, Dev, Jesse and Chook our top four on the night, Pep took home the Mr Magic Carwash award. Oz a standout with eight goals on the night, Pep three, Chook and Tristan two each, Musto and Keefy one a piece on the night.

A few mentions on the night with Cam getting lost in the bush, Nick found magenta appealing but not necessarily to his liking and Gaz showed his ongoing development in goals clearly the standout Goal umpire of the evening. Rhino showed you don’t need balls to have strength as he took down the biggest man on the field and the biggest fine of the night goes to Lars for destroying the nice new Gidgey changerooms, shame on you Dylan!

Another big test for us today as we take on the reigning premiers who will be looking for revenge, both sides will be different from the first round and we will have to be at our best if we are to get the win.

Roos Wrap Round 4

A tough assignment for the young Roos as we took on the undefeated Pickering Brook. Several changes with Zac and Pants making way for Marty, Nick, Lindsey and Dave Ryan who was back for his first game in 18 months!

Kizza took the coin toss in his 150th game for the club, well done on getting to your milestone and congratulations on gaining Life Membership.

Both teams were eager to start well, and Jesse continued where he finished against Swanview, getting plenty of it on his wing. Tristan in his second game for the club was providing an option across half forward and Tyson capitalised to kick his first of the afternoon before heading to the bench with a dodgy hammy. Turnovers in the wrong spot helped Pickers to open their account and it was a point the difference at the first break.

We kicked the first couple in the second both to Tyson who was hobbling deep forward on one leg, as Pickers began to find their range, turnovers again costing us dearly.

The backline was working overtime with Andy backing back into a pack, putting his body on the line to save a certain goal and the late inclusion Nick running hard driving the ball deep into our half forwards, two points the difference at the half.

With limited rotations in the midfield we started to drop off the pace in the third as Pickers began to run over the top of us, our effort had dropped, and we couldn’t run both ways.

Our backline began to feel the pinch and we were turning the ball over in critical positions directly resulting in goals, a couple of strong marks and a goal to the Hawk were the only real highlights for the quarter and it was going to be hard to win form four goals down at the last change.

Ryno had seen enough early in the last and it was time for a bit of a wrestle on the ground, Ethan helping out tried dragged his opponent of him before realising Ryno wouldn’t let him go, first game back and first scrap!

Goals to Blake, Dave and Rory in the last couldn’t bridge the gap and it was Pickers by five goals on what was a disappointing day for the young Roos, plenty to learn and much to improve on if we are to get closer next time round.

Nick our best on the day for his dash down back, Jesse second for his game on the wing, Luke third best his use of the ball above all else on the day with Dev rounding out the top four for his courage and desperation, Tristan took home Mr Magic Car Wash and Ryno received the Peep Show award for his impact on the day.

Tyson on one leg kicked four for the day, Tristan two, Rory, Dave, Blake and Keefy one a piece.

An opportunity this week to play under lights at Gidgegannup, fresh faces in means opportunities to improve, we must do if we are to win.

Roos Wrap Round 2

First home game of the year against a new and improved Mt Helena lions on a drizzly Sunday afternoon. Lindsay and Cam made way for Greggo, Musto, Bevo and a well rested fresh from Bali Peps (who books a holiday in footy season).
The first quarter saw a hard fought tussle between two sides that have obviously done a full preseason ending with a point the difference at the break. Mounties had certainly come to play with their bigger bodies and tall lineup frustrating the young Roos side and if not for our solid backline it could have been much different. As the second quarter began the midfield definitely stepped up their game as Jake, Gaz and Luke started to get first use of the ball with Jesse getting a ton of it on his wing. This lead to Tyson, Aussie and Jake all hitting the scoreboard with our defence limiting Mounties to 1 goal with Marty a standout done back,
Third quarter saw us extend our lead by another 10 points with Aussie kicking 2 quick goals, one compliments of a sharp Musto pass with a cracker from the pocket.
The last quarter started much like the third with Kizza beginning to gain the upper hand over his much taller ruck opponent, this along with a dash down the wing from nick saw us kick another 3 goals with a good one from DJ before moments later getting ironed out by the biggest player on the opposition, a hit that was deemed fair and just a bit high but saw him having a snooze. Final margin a solid 6 goal win to the Roos. Jesse our best on the day with the celebrations Mundaring award, Marty second from The Inn, Gaz took out third best from A1 Caravans, Jake forth from Brookwood reality,, Nick fifth from Mr Magic’s and peep show going to Rory for a solid run in the midfield and down back.
This weeks game sees us welcoming swan view back into the hills comp in what will be a great opportunity to continue to gel as a side. Plenty of hard work and dedication needed to get the job done.
